Boarstall Tower, Buckinghamshire

Boarstall Tower was built as a result of a licence to crenellate granted to John Handlo in 1312 (VCH 1927, 9-14). The gatehouse appears to have been the only fortified masonry structure. The palisades around the moat and the hall block are speculative. The reconstruction shows the complex during the agricultural crisis of 1317-22. A destitute family are seeking alms
